Reflecting on my first year as a Fashion Media Student

My first year as a fashion student as well as my nineteenth year of life was a year filled with endless self growth and realisation. I am so blessed to be studying something that I am passionate about and that allows me to express my creativity uniquely.

The year began with a bump in the road to my journey to success, as I was hit by a vehicle, walking to my varsity campus one morning. However, it was through this traumatic experience that I acquired a greater appreciation, not only for life, but for the people around me that genuinely care about me. It taught me that life is short, and I therefore owe it to myself to turn all of my greatest dreams into a reality. I went through some of the most difficult times of my life thus far, yet came out stronger and wiser than ever.

A highlight of my first year of studies would definitely be the most genuine and creative beings that I have come to know. Before embarking on my fashion career, I always envisioned people in the fashion industry to be judgemental, however every soul I have come across has been so accepting and uplifting.

Throughout my first year of fashion media studies, the  harsh reality of the effect of the fashion industry on the environment has been raised to my attention, leading me to learn more about sustainability in fashion. I hope that through the course of 2020, I will be able to make a difference, by raising awareness, and sharing my knowledge on the importance of sustainability in fashion, in protecting the environment.

It was in my first year of studies that I worked for the SA Fashion Week Media Team at both the Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter collections. Meeting designers and likeminded people in the industry, was truly inspiring. Something that stood out to me was how designers have told stories through their collections, about society and the world around us. Through my experience working at The Fashion Agent (a South African fashion distribution company) throughout the year, I was exposed to the pressures of working in the fast paced industry of fashion, opening my eyes to what exactly I wish to achieve in the world of fashion.

I am so grateful to have ended 2019, exploring new parts of the world. Exploring Amsterdam and Paris, ultimately exposed me to the endless possibilities that this world has to offer, motivating me to work harder and conquer many more goals over the next 365 days of my life.

Thank you for taking your time to read my blog today.

Wishing you a prosperous year ahead, filled with endless love and light.

Love, Sky
